Hello, Fireflies!

While I've been getting the occasional grey hair since I was about 14, I have really been in denial about how much grey hair I have now.  I've been plucking whichever greys I see since that first one, but now it's getting too much for me, and I'm looking for other solutions, without totally changing my hair color.

I was sent three samples of Cover Your Grey Waterproof touch-up hair color - two in Dark Brown, which turned out to be a perfect match for me, and one in Black.  The two Dark Brown touch-ups have two different applicators - a mascara-type wand for the Hair Color touch-up, and a doe-foot applicator for the Root touch-up.

Word of advice: if you're going to have someone help you with this, pick someone who likes you.  I asked my husband for help, and he was trying to be really gentle breaking the news of how many greys I had to try and cover.  I knew my knees were 800 years old, but I had no idea how old my hair was looking!  Most of my greys show up at the crown of my head, but since my hair is usually pulled back, I didn't realize how grey I've actually gone.

I first tried the Hair Color touch up, thinking that the mascara wand would be easy to run through my hair.  As many long-time readers probably know, I have long, thick, curly hair. It turns out, it isn't easy to run *anything* through my hair.  The grey hairs liked to hide under other hairs, or kink and curl in any direction they like, making it hard to capture them and run the wand thoroughly through them.

Still, between the two of us, we managed to cover quite a few of them, and I really could see the difference.  As someone who isn't that familiar with hair dye, the smell was not that pleasant, but it wasn't that strong.  It did fade as the product dried, but then smelled again during my first hair wash.

My hair was ready for a wash before I put the color on, but even so, I could tell that the texture was a little stiff where we'd applied the product.  Definitely brush it through, if you can.  I did end up washing my hair the next day, as I had planned.  There was still a substantial amount of color in my hair after the first wash, but it was pretty much all gone after the second.

The doe-foot applicator is more designed for root touch-ups, but it actually worked better for my type of hair.  It was easier to get more product down and not have to go over each strand several times like I had to do with the bristle wand.

For some reason, this one didn't smell as strongly, either. It lasted about as long, too.  I do like that my grey hairs fall in line when there is color applied, even temporary color like this.  I didn't have as many grey hairs sticking straight up out of my head!

I would think that these touch-ups would work much easier on someone with straight or short hair.  Even so, for a fairly quick touch-up, this stuff worked pretty well for me.  I can see myself reaching for it the day before an event.  I saw that on their website, they just introduced a spray color product that I think might work even better for my hair texture!

I may have to be realistic about having more greys than I thought I did, though, and start using a permanent hair color with something like this for impromptu quick fixes.
